Southeast Manitoba is witnessing a breathtaking change as fall approaches. A great place to watch the seasonal change is Whitemouth Lake, according to Bob Austman of the RM of Piney.

“There are so many areas in southeastern Manitoba, but one of the areas that I really enjoy looking at the fall colors in the district is around Whitemouth Lake. So, if you take that drive straight north of Vassar, Manitoba and go up to Whitemouth Lake, you’ll see a variety of hardwoods and softwoods. So right now, the hardwoods are of course showing their nice yellow colors, especially the poplar, and we’re starting to see the tamarack.”

He notes, the tamarack is a unique conifer that sheds its needles in fall, displaying striking golden foliage. According to Austman, the beautiful sight of these trees is a characteristic of the fall season in the area. Buffalo Point is another interesting place, with its equally bright hardwoods and tamaracks adorning the landscape.

But, given the recent intense rainfall, Austman advises anybody wishing to explore the forested routes off Highway 12 to proceed with caution. He points out there are some washouts in low-lying regions that may render certain paths unusable. Austman cautions outdoor enthusiasts to exercise caution, especially while near drainage ditches that could be dangerous.

He adds, this time of year offers not only the chance to see the beautiful fall foliage, but also to go chokecherry picking. The juicy fruits are perfect for making jams and jellies, but locals are reminded to be bear-smart, as black bears are also foraging for food as they prepare for winter.

Over at the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve, Norm Gregoire points out another unexpected highlight of fall: Poison Ivy.

“Usually, as someone that’s into nature, bringing folks out into it, I usually say, ‘Stay away from Poison Ivy.’ But at this time of year and probably for the next couple weeks at least, the Poison Ivy is absolutely incredible. The colors of it are just insane. In my opinion, it’s actually the best fall foliage compared to any of our trees or anything like that.”

Whether enjoying the trails of Whitemouth Lake or photographing the striking Dogwood shrubs, the region’s autumn display promises to be a captivating experience.
